WhatsApp to Soon Use Meta AI for Message Summaries: Here’s What to Expect

WhatsApp Trials New AI-Powered Tool to Provide Summaries of Unread Messages on Android

WhatsApp is testing a new feature on its Android beta version that can summarize unread messages with just one tap, making it easier for users to catch up on missed chats. The feature uses Meta AI to generate quick summaries, helping users save time, especially in busy group chats or long conversations.

As per a report from WABetaInfo, this feature is currently available in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.18.18. It’s designed with privacy as a priority, working in both individual and group chats while ensuring that user data stays secure.

To use the feature, beta users can enable something called “Private Processing” from the app’s settings. Once active, a new button appears when users receive a large number of unread messages. Tapping this button will send a request to the AI system, which then delivers a summary of those messages, without saving any of the data.

Private Processing works locally and ensures that the message content doesn’t get uploaded to Meta or WhatsApp servers. According to the developers, even Meta can’t view or trace the data, and the user’s identity remains anonymous.

This AI-based message summarization is completely optional. Users can opt out if they prefer not to use it or are concerned about privacy.

In addition, WhatsApp is also working on a separate AI feature called “Writing Help.” This tool aims to assist users in rewriting or adjusting their messages by changing the tone or phrasing—ideal for improving communication or clarity.
