Unity Launches Beta of Apple Vision Pro Game Development Tool

Unity has taken a significant step in the world of spatial computing by unveiling PolySpatial, its beta development platform for visionOS. This technology is designed to empower developers to create immersive 3D experiences for Apple’s innovative “spatial computing” platform.

Marc Whitten, President of Unity Create, acknowledges the challenges of building applications for hardware that promises to revolutionize computing. The goal of PolySpatial is to minimize friction during the development process, providing developers with familiar workflows if they have previously built applications using the Unity Engine.

Although gaming has been a crucial driver for various computing platforms, Apple’s WWDC keynote appeared light on Vision Pro gaming experiences. Apple seems to be positioning the product as a productivity tool, with demonstrations focusing on office, creative workflows, and enterprise applications.

However, gaming experiences are likely to play a crucial role in the success of Apple Vision Pro. To address this, Unity aims to support developers in creating groundbreaking applications for the platform. Mike Rockwell, VP of Vision Products Group, expressed excitement for the Unity-based apps and games that will run natively on Apple Vision Pro, granting access to cutting-edge visionOS features like low latency pass-through and high-resolution rendering.

One of the prominent examples of Unity’s role in this space is the game “What the Golf?”. The game’s developer, Triband, has already begun using PolySpatial to port the title to Apple Vision Pro, leveraging Unity’s multi-platform support and comprehensive development tools to create an engaging experience for the platform.

Content is undoubtedly crucial when launching a new platform, and Unity is well-aware of this fact. The beta release of PolySpatial will allow developers to get a head start on creating experiences for the Vision Pro before its official release early next year.

Unity is closely working with creators during the beta phase, collecting feedback and addressing any issues or unclear workflows to enhance the platform’s usability. By collaborating with developers throughout the creation process, Unity aims to refine PolySpatial and ensure its success as a game-changing development tool for spatial computing.

The combination of Unity’s experience, the potential for groundbreaking applications, and the community of talented developers is driving excitement for the future of spatial computing with Apple Vision Pro. As the platform’s launch date approaches, developers are eager to create content that showcases the full potential of this innovative technology.
