There are plans for Microsoft to introduce AI Copilot to the Windows 10 platform

The potential integration of AI Copilot into Windows 10 by Microsoft could encourage developers to create additional plug-ins, especially considering the significant number of users still utilizing Microsoft’s older operating system.

There are reports indicating that Microsoft is in the process of introducing Windows 11 AI Copilot features to Windows 10 users, along with several ‘select new features and services.’ This initiative is aimed at expanding the tech giant’s reach to the approximately 1 billion users who continue to use Windows 10.

As per information from sources cited by Windows Central’s Zac Bowden, Microsoft plans to incorporate a Copilot button into the Windows 10 taskbar. Clicking on this button will activate the same Copilot sidebar interface found in Windows 11.

Bowden further explains that a significant driver behind Microsoft’s decision to integrate AI-powered features into Windows 10 is market share. With around 1 billion users globally, Windows 10 surpasses Windows 11, which currently has 40 million users. This strategic move aligns with the aim of making AI Copilot accessible to the majority of Windows users who are yet to experience its capabilities.

Revealed during Build 2023, Copilot AI is driven by OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model. It empowers users to execute tasks such as altering the system theme, regulating volume, and comprehending the context of a page. Additionally, users can request Copilot to provide a summary of the webpage when using Edge.

The potential integration of AI Copilot into Windows 10 could serve as a motivation for developers to create additional plugins for the platform. The report suggests that AI Copilot will provide equivalent functionalities to its Windows 11 counterpart, and Microsoft has intentions to bring more features to the older operating system.

In response to inquiries about Microsoft’s ongoing support for Windows 10 beyond October 2025, sources cited by Bowden indicate that internal discussions are underway, but a definitive decision has not yet been reached. Additionally, the timeline for Microsoft introducing AI Copilot to its older operating system remains uncertain.
