Signal introduces usernames, allowing users to maintain the privacy of their phone numbers

Signal has unveiled the launch of usernames, marking a significant update for the platform. Previously, users had to share their phone numbers to initiate chats on Signal. With usernames, users can now create unique identifiers to connect with others instead. While currently in beta, usernames will gradually roll out to all users in the upcoming weeks. Notably, Signal still mandates a phone number during the registration process.

Renowned for its robust security and privacy measures, Signal distinguishes itself among end-to-end encrypted messaging apps. By enabling users to safeguard their phone numbers, Signal addresses a potential vulnerability where hackers could exploit phone number hijacking to gain access to messages.

Signal clarifies that usernames function differently from social media platforms. They are not logins or handles used within the app. Rather, they serve as a convenient means to connect without divulging phone numbers.

When creating a username, your profile name remains visible to others, concealing the username itself. Additionally, users cannot locate or view your username unless shared directly. Signal does not provide a searchable directory akin to platforms like X and Instagram. Alternatively, users can generate QR codes or links to share their usernames.

Once a username is established, your phone number becomes hidden from other Signal users, visible only to those who already have it saved in their contacts. Messaging interactions reveal only your profile name and image, omitting the phone number. However, users retain the option to display their phone number by adjusting settings in the “Phone Number” section.

To set up a username, navigate to your “Profile” settings and select a unique identifier, preferably ending with two or more numbers. You can modify your username at any time and opt to delete it altogether if desired. Signal-designed usernames are flexible, allowing users to create specific identifiers for events or group activities, which can be changed as needed.

To initiate chats via usernames, access the “New Chat” screen within the app and input the recipient’s username.

Moreover, Signal introduces a new privacy setting enabling users to control who can discover them on the app using their phone number. In the past, individuals could locate you on Signal simply by having your phone number. With the new setting, users can restrict this accessibility by navigating to the “Who can find me by my number” option in settings and selecting “Nobody.” Alternatively, selecting “Everybody” allows anyone with your phone number to send message requests, which users can accept, reject, or block accordingly.
