Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has granted his approval to the proposal of declaring a public holiday in the city from September 8th to 10th, aligning with the upcoming G20 summit. This decision will see the closure of all schools and government offices, including those of the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi), during these dates.
In preparation for the highly anticipated G20 summit scheduled on September 8, 2023, the state administration is actively considering the implementation of movement restrictions for the general public in the capital. This strategic move aims to ensure the seamless transit of G20 dignitaries by minimizing road congestion. Notably, the Department of Education has issued a directive to schools, mandating the declaration of a holiday for students and employees on September 8th, 2023.
Leading up to the main G20 event, participants are expected to arrive ahead of time for a special program at Pragati Maidan, which will be complemented by an enriching cultural event. Furthermore, the spouses of the leaders attending the summit will explore the city’s offerings, including visits to the National Gallery for Modern Art and Pusa Road. In order to make their stay even more engaging, officials are actively exploring the possibility of guided tours for the visiting dignitaries, allowing them to discover other notable attractions in the city.
The focal point of the G20 summit is scheduled for September 9th and 10th, with an impressive lineup anticipated to include 29 heads of state, delegates representing the European Union, invited guest countries, and 14 prominent leaders from international organizations. In anticipation of the event, several top-notch hotels located in the Delhi-NCR region have been designated to accommodate these esteemed attendees.
Given the importance of security, enhanced measures are expected to be implemented at various key locations across Delhi, including Chandni Chowk, Khan Market, Dilli Haat, Connaught Place, and Malcha Marg Market. While no official advisory has been released yet, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has already initiated efforts to clear 26 major roadways within the city, starting from August 16th. The Delhi Police is also gearing up to release comprehensive traffic advisories specifically tailored for the upcoming G20 summit.
As Delhi gears up to host this significant international event, the city is poised to showcase its hospitality and organizational prowess on the global stage. With meticulous planning and strategic arrangements, the G20 summit is expected to be a successful and momentous occasion, further enhancing Delhi’s reputation as a hub for prestigious gatherings and diplomatic engagements.
