OpenAI completes development of the ‘o3 mini’ reasoning AI model and prepares for its upcoming launch.

In September 2024, the generative AI leader unveiled its o1 AI models, which were designed to allocate more processing time for handling complex queries and solving advanced problems.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has now completed work on its new reasoning AI model, o3 mini, and plans to launch it within the next few weeks, CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday.

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has incorporated user feedback into its development process and intends to release both the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT updates simultaneously, Altman shared in a post on the social media platform X.

In December, OpenAI revealed that it was testing the o3 and o3 mini reasoning models as part of its efforts to compete with other tech giants like Alphabet’s Google in creating more intelligent AI systems capable of addressing complex challenges. The company initially aimed to roll out o3 mini by late January, followed by the full version of o3, showcasing its progress in building advanced large language models to attract new users and investments.

The o1 models, released in September, were introduced as tools capable of reasoning through complex scenarios and solving intricate problems across fields such as mathematics, coding, and science. OpenAI emphasized that the upcoming o3 and o3 mini models would surpass their predecessors in power and capability.

Additionally, OpenAI recently announced a beta feature called Tasks for ChatGPT, marking its entry into the virtual assistant market alongside competitors like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. The initial release of ChatGPT in late 2022 sparked significant investment activity in the AI sector, culminating in OpenAI securing $6.6 billion in funding as of October 2024.
