New ‘Generative Recolor’ AI Feature Revealed by Adobe for Adobe Illustrator

Designers and marketers now have access to Adobe’s latest offering, Generative Recolor, which leverages generative AI to transform the colors, themes, and fonts of graphics within Adobe Illustrator. This release is a significant step forward for Adobe as they continue their journey of incorporating diverse generative AI functionalities into their premier design software.

Generative Recolor is a powerful tool within Adobe’s Firefly collection of generative AI tools and models. It enables users to quickly refresh the colors and fonts of their designs. In May, Adobe introduced “Generative Fill” in Photoshop, allowing users to zoom out from an image and let generative AI fill in the surrounding content. This feature has been utilized to expand popular memes and manipulate images to resemble a hospital setting, among other creative applications.

Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s Vice President of generative AI, envisions a future where generative AI will play a significant role in content editing. The beta version of Generative Recolor is currently available in Adobe Illustrator, a popular software for creating logos, posters, and packaging designs used by renowned brands like Coca-Cola and Land Rover. Adobe Illustrator specializes in vector graphics, ensuring high-quality images that can be resized without compromising their resolution.

Designers can now generate seasonal color palette variations for their marketing and advertising campaigns by utilizing descriptive prompts like “peaceful pastels,” “neon pop,” and “fall foliage.” This empowers them to explore diverse visual styles and effectively convey the desired mood and theme in their designs. Generative Recolor utilizes Firefly to create a representation of a scene or theme based on the text prompt. It then extracts color palettes from the generated image and applies them to the user’s graphic, transforming its colors to match the desired mood or theme.

Since March, Adobe’s text-to-image AI tool has been used to create nearly 200 million images.

In response to the increasing demand, Adobe has unveiled its strategic initiative to extend its generative AI capabilities to enterprises. This move aims to cater to the specific needs and requirements of businesses, empowering them with the transformative potential of generative AI in their creative processes. However, some artists and Adobe stock contributors have raised concerns about the usage of their work for training Adobe’s generative AI model without explicit permission and the lack of transparency regarding public domain images’ utilization.

Adobe’s proprietary AI model, Firefly, undergoes training using a vast collection of public domain images sourced from platforms like Creative Commons, Wikimedia, and Flickr Commons. Additionally, Firefly benefits from an extensive dataset comprising 300 million images and videos sourced from Adobe Stock, enriching its capabilities and enhancing its performance. Although Adobe assures the suitability of Firefly for commercial use, the company has committed to compensating enterprise customers for any legal expenses incurred in copyright infringement cases.

Costin reveals that hundreds of Adobe researchers are dedicated to enhancing the quality of the Firefly AI model, aiming to generate images with greater detail and higher resolution. Adobe is also working on developing models for video and 3D generation, with plans to expand its inventory and data catalog using Adobe Stock’s resources. Costin emphasizes that AI will not replace creatives but rather foster a competitive environment where creatives can utilize AI as a tool in their creative process.

Firefly envisions a future where creators can leverage everyday language and various inputs to swiftly explore design variations, eliminate distractions from photos, incorporate elements into illustrations, alter the mood of videos, add texture to 3D objects, develop immersive digital experiences, and more. This seamless workflow allows creators to customize and edit their content effortlessly by utilizing Firefly in conjunction with other tools within the Creative Cloud ecosystem.
