Google is adding Gemini to your car through Android Auto

Google has shared plans to bring its AI tool, Gemini, to vehicles that use Android Auto, with the rollout expected in the near future.

This update is expected to roll out in the coming months, as shared during the Android Show before the company’s 2025 I/O event.

According to Google, bringing Gemini to Android Auto — and later to vehicles that use Google’s built-in software — will make driving both easier and more enjoyable.
“This could be one of the biggest changes to how we use tech in cars in a long time,” said Patrick Brady, who leads Android for Cars, during an online media briefing.
Gemini will be available in Android Auto in two key ways:

Smarter Voice Help
Gemini will take the place of Google Assistant, offering a more advanced voice assistant experience.
It will still send messages, play songs, and perform familiar tasks — but you won’t need to speak in short or stiff commands. Thanks to its natural understanding of language, talking to Gemini will feel more like chatting with a person.

It can even remember details, like if one of your contacts prefers texts in another language, and will handle translation for you. You’ll also be able to ask it to suggest places to eat along your drive, with more specific filters like “vegan taco spots.”

Always-Ready Conversations with Gemini Live
Another feature, called Gemini Live, allows the AI to stay active and ready to talk at any time. You could ask it for vacation ideas, recipes your child might enjoy, or even facts about Roman history — all while sitting in your car.

In short, Google is aiming to make in-car experiences more helpful, friendly, and interactive with Gemini.
If you’re wondering whether all this might be too distracting while driving, Google doesn’t think so. Patrick Brady explained that because Gemini understands natural speech, drivers can give commands more easily without overthinking. This, he said, will actually help reduce mental effort.

That’s a strong statement, especially as many drivers are asking car makers to move away from touchscreens and bring back simple physical buttons — a change that some companies are already starting to make.

There’s still a lot to figure out. For now, Gemini will rely on Google’s cloud to function in Android Auto and cars with Google’s built-in system.

But Google is teaming up with car manufacturers to eventually allow Gemini to work directly in the car, without needing to connect to the cloud. This would make the system faster and more reliable — something important in cars that are constantly switching between cell towers.

New cars also collect plenty of information through sensors and even cameras inside and outside the vehicle. When asked if Gemini will be able to use this data in the future, Brady said there’s no official news yet, but it’s something the team is seriously discussing.
“We do believe that as vehicles come with more cameras, there could be some exciting new possibilities,” he added.

Gemini will roll out on Android Auto and Google Built-In in all areas where Google’s AI is already offered, and it will work in more than 40 languages.
