Google Discover now shows AI-generated summaries on Android and iOS

Google is rolling out a new feature to its Discover feed on both Android and iOS devices, where users will now see AI-generated summaries instead of traditional headlines from news publishers. These summaries appear with the original publication’s logo in the top left corner and mention the sources used to create the summary.

Tapping the icons in the corner opens a “More” button that reveals all the related articles. Each summary includes a short preview and a “See more” option to read the full AI-generated text. Google also displays a warning that the summaries might not always be accurate, as the content is created by artificial intelligence.

According to TechCrunch, not all news stories show these summaries yet. A Google spokesperson confirmed that the feature is gradually rolling out to users in the United States. For now, it mainly covers trending lifestyle topics such as sports and entertainment, aiming to help people quickly decide what content they want to explore.

Google is also experimenting with new ways of showing news in the Discover feed, including bullet points under headlines. However, this format doesn’t carry the “AI-generated” label.

This update is part of Google’s broader efforts to integrate AI across its services, aiming to give users faster access to information. While this may improve convenience, it has raised concerns in the publishing industry. Many worry that fewer users will click through to original articles, potentially lowering website traffic and ad revenue. A recent report by The Economist, using Similarweb data, highlighted a 15% drop in global search traffic in June compared to the same time last year.

As this feature expands, both users and publishers will be watching closely to see how AI-generated content changes the way news is consumed.
