G20 Leaders Embrace Digital Public Infrastructure and AI Governance

The G20 leaders have underscored the importance of fostering international cooperation and engaging in continued discussions regarding global governance in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). They have advocated for the establishment of a digital public infrastructure (DPI) that is safe, secure, trusted, accountable, and inclusive, with the goal of facilitating service delivery and innovation.

The G20 Declaration has enthusiastically endorsed the ‘G20 Framework for Systems of Digital Public Infrastructure,’ acknowledging the pivotal role of DPI in delivering services on a societal scale. It reaffirms the commitment to collaborative efforts in advancing international governance for AI.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar characterized the Declaration as a remarkable accomplishment, emphasizing the profound impact of India’s G20 Presidency on the evolving global landscape.

Recognizing the crucial role of DPI in service delivery, the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration lends its support to the ‘G20 Framework for Systems of Digital Public Infrastructure.’ This framework, which is voluntary and recommendatory, outlines guidelines for the development, deployment, and governance of DPI.

The G20 Declaration emphasizes that a secure, trustworthy, accountable, and inclusive DPI, while upholding human rights, personal data protection, privacy, and intellectual property rights, can enhance resilience and facilitate both service delivery and innovation.

The adoption of the New Delhi Declaration represents a significant achievement for India’s G20 presidency. It highlights the consensus reached among member nations despite escalating tensions and differing perspectives surrounding the Ukraine conflict.

The G20 Declaration directs attention toward enhancing safety, security, resilience, and trust within the digital economy. It explicitly endorses the ‘G20 Framework for Systems of Digital Public Infrastructure,’ which offers voluntary guidelines for the development, deployment, and governance of DPI.

In its pursuit of building a safe, secure, resilient, and trustworthy digital economy, the declaration emphasizes the promotion of digital ecosystems and the responsible harnessing of AI for the benefit of all.

To fully unlock the potential of AI, equitably distribute its advantages, and mitigate associated risks, the G20 commits to collaborative efforts aimed at promoting international cooperation and advancing discussions on global AI governance.

Furthermore, the Declaration extends a warm welcome to India’s proposal to create and maintain a Global Digital Public Infrastructure Repository (GDPIR). This repository, consisting of DPI voluntarily shared by G20 members and beyond, represents a commendable initiative in the realm of digital public infrastructure.

In conclusion, the G20 Leaders’ Declaration underscores the significance of international collaboration and governance in the field of AI. It emphasizes the importance of a secure and inclusive digital public infrastructure while recognizing India’s leadership and initiatives in this evolving landscape.
