DeepSeek R1 on Android? Infinix could bring Chinese AI to more users with the upcoming Note 50 series

Infinix is set to unveil its Note 50 series in Indonesia on March 3, with possible expansion to global markets. Reports suggest the brand may integrate the Chinese AI model DeepSeek R1 into its Folax voice assistant, enhancing its ability to handle complex queries. An official confirmation regarding this AI integration is expected on February 26.

The teaser video for the Note 50 series hints at “Infinix AI,” though details remain scarce. According to a GSMArena report, the Folax voice assistant may incorporate DeepSeek R1 to improve search capabilities and voice command responses.

What is DeepSeek R1 and Why is Infinix Interested?

DeepSeek R1 is a reasoning-based AI model developed in China, competing with the likes of OpenAI o3 Mini and Grok. Unlike traditional AI models like GPT-4o or Gemini 2.0, reasoning models are designed to handle complex tasks such as coding, scientific analysis, and multi-step problem-solving.

A key advantage of DeepSeek R1 is that it is entirely free and open-source, making it accessible for smartphone manufacturers to implement. While most Android phones, including those from Google and Samsung, rely on Gemini AI, and Apple integrates ChatGPT into Siri, Infinix may become the first smartphone brand to incorporate DeepSeek R1.

Currently, the Folax voice assistant is powered by Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI APIs, utilizing the GPT-3.5 model. Previous versions of Folax showed potential but struggled with handling complex queries effectively. The integration of DeepSeek R1 could significantly enhance its functionality.

An official statement from Infinix regarding this integration is expected on February 26. We have reached out to the company for confirmation and will update this article if further details are provided.
