OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform experienced a significant outage on Thursday. Early in the morning, users reported difficulties accessing ChatGPT across various platforms. According to OpenAI’s status page, the issue was first acknowledged at 5:12 a.m. Pacific Time and the root cause was identified within an hour.
A note on the status page at 5:43 a.m. stated that the team was working on a fix. By 7:09 a.m., OpenAI announced that the fix had been implemented and they were monitoring the situation. Users can now log into ChatGPT without issues.
OpenAI’s API also faced downtime during the incident, but the company has confirmed that it has been resolved.
While outages on ChatGPT are relatively rare, they are not unprecedented. In December, ChatGPT, OpenAI’s API, and its video generation tool, Sora, experienced a major service disruption. It took the team approximately three hours to restore full functionality after acknowledging the issue.
