Bill Gates recently shared his thoughts on how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping work and society. He believes that while AI will improve productivity and allow people to focus on more meaningful work, the transition might happen too quickly for many to adapt.
Speaking in an interview, Gates explained that automation could reduce workloads and allow people to spend time on things like education, caregiving, or longer vacations. However, he warned that if these changes come too fast, some people and industries might struggle to keep up.
His comments come as more experts raise concerns that AI could replace many entry-level white-collar jobs. For instance, the CEO of Anthropic predicted that up to 50% of such roles might disappear by 2030 due to AI advancements.
Gates also talked about artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a level where AI can perform jobs like telesales better and more affordably than humans. He said that while people define AGI differently, we’re approaching that level quickly.
He admitted that even he’s surprised by how fast AI is evolving. Gates said he uses AI tools with deep research features to understand complex topics and often finds the results as good as what top experts would provide.
He’s also working with Microsoft and OpenAI to bring AI tools to low-income countries for improving healthcare, education, and farming.
When asked what advice he would give to young people preparing for an AI-powered future, Gates said:
“Stay curious, read often, and learn how to use new technologies. Understanding AI will be essential going forward—even though the road ahead may be challenging.”
