Big change ahead? OpenAI is working on a new AI-powered web browser that could rival Google Chrome

OpenAI is working on a new web browser powered by artificial intelligence that could compete with Google Chrome. This upcoming browser will include smart features similar to ChatGPT, allowing users to do more directly inside the browser without jumping between multiple websites.

AI Built into Browsing
According to reports, the browser will have a built-in chat interface where users can ask questions or give tasks—just like they do with ChatGPT. For example, the AI could help fill out forms or make online bookings, all within the same window.

Instead of simply showing search results, the browser will let users interact with an AI agent that handles tasks for them.

Based on Google’s Chromium Platform
The browser is expected to be built using Chromium, the open-source technology behind Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera. This allows for a familiar user experience while adding smart AI capabilities on top.

A Direct Challenge to Google
If this browser becomes popular—especially among ChatGPT’s estimated 500 million weekly users—it could become serious competition for Google. Chrome helps Google collect data for its advertising business, which brings in a large portion of its revenue. OpenAI’s browser could disrupt that flow by keeping user activity within its own system.

More Control Over Data
Unlike other AI tools that work as browser extensions, OpenAI’s new browser is expected to be a standalone application. This gives the company more control over user data and a smoother connection with its upcoming AI assistant, “Operator.”

By designing everything in-house, OpenAI can better integrate AI features and manage how data is used, offering users a smarter and possibly more private browsing experience.
