Auto-generated transcripts will be available on Apple Podcasts with the release of iOS 17.4

In iOS 17.4, Apple Podcasts will introduce support for auto-generated transcripts, enhancing the listening experience for users. These transcripts will be available for English, French, German, and Spanish-language podcasts and will be accessible in over 170 countries and regions.

Similar to how lyrics function in Apple Music, users will be able to view a live text version of an episode, with words highlighted as they listen. Additionally, users can tap anywhere in the transcript to play the episode from that specific point. To access the transcript, users can click on the new “quote” icon at the bottom of the Now Playing screen. Moreover, there’s an option to view the transcript without listening by pressing down on the episode details page and selecting “View Transcript.”

Upon the publication of a new episode, Apple’s software automatically generates a transcript. The company mentions there might be a “short delay” as it processes the transcript, meaning it may not be immediately visible after the episode is uploaded. Transcriptions for back catalog episodes will be added gradually over time, as per the company’s statement.

Creators have the option to provide their own transcripts by adjusting the setting in Apple Podcasts Connect under the Availability tab. It’s worth noting that uploaded transcripts must meet Apple’s standards to be displayed. This includes ensuring there are no spelling or punctuation errors.

According to the company, episodes featuring cross-talk—multiple speakers talking simultaneously—may “impact the quality of the transcription.” Transcripts are also not displayed for “explicit episodes” when content restrictions are activated. Additionally, Apple does not transcribe music lyrics.

Today, Apple introduced the beta version of iOS 17.4, primarily targeting EU developers with notable changes including a revised fee structure, new frameworks and APIs for alternative browser engines, and expanded options for distributing iOS apps from alternative app stores. The public release of iOS 17.4 is anticipated in March.

Earlier this week, Apple made iOS 17.3 widely accessible, offering users access to features like Stolen Device Protection and collaborative playlists for Apple Music.
