Apple has announced plans to simplify the process for customers to switch to Android due to the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), effective today. Alongside facilitating alternative app stores, introducing new business terms for EU app developers, and providing mobile browser choice screens, among other measures, Apple will enhance its data portability offerings. This includes making it easier to transfer data from an iPhone to a non-Apple device.
While this feature is not currently available, Apple aims to have it ready by fall 2025, according to the company’s compliance plan with the new EU law. The DMA seeks to promote competition in the app ecosystem by requiring Apple to loosen its control over the App Store and iOS. Despite developer backlash, Apple has managed to mitigate the potential financial impact of DMA by imposing new fees for developers wishing to adhere to the DMA rules.
Beyond the App Store, the DMA also addresses data portability. Apple’s Data & Privacy website will be updated to allow users to export their App Store data to authorized third parties. At present, individuals have the option to transfer their iCloud Photos to Google Photos or obtain diverse data amassed by applications developed by Apple. Users will also have the option to schedule daily or weekly downloads of their App Store data for up to 180 days.
Regarding the transition to Android, Apple provided limited details about the new project but mentioned that its solution would assist other “mobile operating system providers” in developing better data transfer solutions from an iPhone to a non-Apple phone. Although the document does not explicitly mention “Android,” it is evident that Google’s mobile OS will benefit the most from such a system.
Furthermore, Apple highlighted that an alternative method for exporting browser data to a new browser on the same device will be accessible either later this year or in early 2025.
Currently, Android users can utilize Google’s “Switch to Android” iOS app to migrate essential content to a new Android device. Nevertheless, certain less essential information might still be absent, requiring users to deactivate iMessage to guarantee the delivery of their new messages to their Android devices. Apple has not specified the areas it aims to improve with its new solution.
