Anticipating Apple’s September Event: 6 Key Announcements to Watch For

It’s that time of year again, and Apple is preparing to showcase the latest innovations it has been working on. Speculation is rife about what will be revealed at the September 9th event, with the anticipated launch of the iPhone 16 leading the charge. Additionally, several parts of the Apple ecosystem seem ready for an update.

In the context of increasing focus on AI, it will be interesting to see how Apple’s iteration, Apple Intelligence, compares to what’s already out there. Hopefully, Apple won’t dedicate the majority of its event to AI like Google did, but we’ll have to wait and see.

With that in mind, here are the key areas to keep an eye on during Apple’s upcoming event:

1. iPhone 16 Series

September traditionally marks the unveiling of Apple’s new iPhone lineup, and this year we expect to see the iPhone 16 series take center stage. Rumored to feature the A18 Bionic chip across the entire lineup—unlike the staggered A16 and A17 chips in the iPhone 15 series—the iPhone 16 models are also expected to fully integrate Apple Intelligence into everyday functions.

Reports suggest Apple will introduce the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. These devices are likely to include the ‘Action Button,’ a customizable button introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro, as well as a new ‘Capture Button’ dedicated to photography.

There are also whispers about an update to the more budget-friendly iPhone SE, though that might not happen until 2025.

2. MacBook Pro and Possible ‘MacBook Fold’

While Apple usually doesn’t release new MacBook Pros in September, the device is due for an update before the end of 2024.

The MacBook Pro is expected to receive a significant upgrade with the introduction of the M4 chip. There are also rumors about a slimmer version of the MacBook Pro inspired by the iPad Pro, but a 2024 launch seems unlikely.

One of the more intriguing rumors is about a foldable MacBook, potentially called the ‘MacBook Fold,’ which could function as a laptop when folded and a monitor when unfolded. However, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, we probably won’t see this until 2026, though a sneak peek this September would be exciting.

3. Apple Watch Series 10 and SE

September is also when Apple usually unveils its new Apple Watch models. With competitors like Google and Samsung launching their latest smartwatches, the new Apple Watch Series 10 will have to stand out in a crowded market.

While details are scarce, it’s a safe bet that Apple Intelligence will play a significant role in the new features. Additionally, an updated version of the Apple Watch SE is expected, potentially featuring a plastic body and a slightly larger display, according to Bloomberg.

4. AirPods 4

Apple’s AirPods are due for a substantial update, with two new versions possibly being released later this year. The higher-end variant is rumored to include Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and could sit between the base AirPod and the Pro models.

Improved audio quality and a USB-C charging case are also expected, replacing the old Lightning technology.

5. iPad and iPad Mini

Although the iPad Air and iPad Pro were refreshed earlier this year, the iPad Mini hasn’t seen an update since 2021. It’s likely we’ll see a new iPad Mini with either the A17 or A18 processor, improved Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth capabilities. An OLED screen might also be on the cards, enhancing the display quality.

There’s also talk of an updated base iPad model, which hasn’t been refreshed since 2022. This version would likely feature similar hardware to the Mini but with a larger display, making it a more affordable option compared to the Air and Pro models.

6. iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro, and Mac Studio

Apple’s all-in-one desktop, the iMac, is expected to get an M4 processor upgrade later this year, with a strong emphasis on AI integration. This refresh will likely be limited to the 24-inch model, as Apple has no current plans for a 27-inch iMac.

The Mac Mini is also set for a significant upgrade, moving from the M2 and M2 Pro chips to the more powerful M4 and M4 Pro. It’s rumored to be similar in size to the Apple TV and will include three USB-C ports, along with power input and HDMI.

As for Apple’s higher-end desktop offerings, the Mac Pro and Mac Studio, Bloomberg reports that we might not see an upgrade until 2025. However, there’s always a chance they could be announced at this event, possibly featuring more powerful M4 variants like the M4 Ultra, Extreme, or Max.
