A recent tweet has left people wondering if X will soon enable users to make calls

X is developing a fresh feature that will allow you to call your friends within the app.

Apart from Elon Musk’s fascination with the alphabet, Twitter’s rebranding of X holds significance. The platform aspires to evolve into a comprehensive app offering more than just micro-blogging. Although minimal progress has been made in this direction, except for the removal of Twitter’s previous branding, there appears to be a shift happening now.

Andrea Conway, a designer at X, has dropped a hint that the platform might be getting a built-in voice call feature. In a recent post, she mentioned that she had “just made a call to someone on X.”

Although X’s direct messages (DMs) currently allow voice messages, the addition of call support will mark a significant step. Presently, the only method for real-time discussions on the platform is through Spaces, a feature similar to Clubhouse’s social audio offering. However, since Spaces is accessible to anyone and enables participation from multiple individuals, it’s not ideal for private one-on-one conversations.

This could change when and if the rumored voice-calling feature becomes available on X.

Call support would also contribute to making X a more comprehensive social media platform, comparable to Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, it might help X establish a more significant distinction from potential competitors like Threads and Bluesky.

Elon Musk initially discussed the prospect of calling features on the platform in May. In a tweet, he disclosed, “Soon, you’ll be able to engage in voice and video chat from your handle with anyone on this platform.” This way, you can communicate with people worldwide without sharing your phone number.”
