Jio collaborates with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce fast Starlink internet in India

Jio has partnered with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite-based high-speed broadband in India, aiming to enhance internet access, especially in remote and rural areas. This collaboration will expand Jio’s digital ecosystem by integrating low-orbit satellite connectivity into its broadband services.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that Starlink’s inclusion will improve internet accessibility and reliability across India. He described it as a transformative step toward achieving seamless connectivity in the digital age. Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, also expressed enthusiasm about working with Jio, highlighting their commitment to bringing Starlink’s services to more users, pending approval from Indian authorities.

While the exact launch date and pricing remain undisclosed, Starlink’s services are expected to be more expensive than Jio’s existing broadband options. In the U.S., the subscription is priced at $80 per month, and the Starlink kit—which includes a satellite dish, router, power supply, and mounting accessories—costs approximately $350. The dish connects directly to SpaceX satellites, enabling high-speed internet even in locations without fiber or mobile network coverage.

Despite its advantages, Starlink has some limitations. Weather conditions like heavy rain or snow can temporarily disrupt connectivity, and the dish requires an unobstructed view of the sky for optimal performance. However, it is particularly valuable for areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is unavailable.

With Jio being the world’s largest mobile network provider and Starlink leading the way in low-orbit satellite internet, this partnership is expected to bridge India’s digital divide. By combining Jio’s extensive reach with Starlink’s cutting-edge satellite technology, millions of users across the country could soon benefit from faster and more reliable internet access.
