The latest AI capabilities in Roblox decrease the duration required for crafting avatars and 3D models

Roblox has announced the introduction of two new AI technologies aimed at reducing the time required to create avatars and 3D models. These features, developed on Roblox’s artificial intelligence platform, are designed to assist creators in eliminating time-consuming steps involved in avatar setup and texturing when building content on the Roblox platform.

The first feature, known as “Avatar Auto Setup,” simplifies the avatar creation process by automatically converting a 3D body mesh into a live, animated avatar that is ready for users to utilize. Upon selecting this feature, Roblox conducts various tests on an asset and automatically rigs, cages, segments, and skins 3D models. The auto setup identifies the avatar’s different body parts to incorporate clothing and facial features for facial animation. This allows the avatar to animate and interact with its surrounding environment. Roblox states that Avatar Auto Setup enables creators to complete a process that traditionally takes days in just a few minutes.

The second feature, named “Texture Generator,” empowers creators to swiftly alter the appearance of 3D objects using simple language text prompts. Creators can use this feature to prototype new looks and bring textures to life quickly. Texture Generator maps the object and applies a three-dimensional texture that matches the object’s geometry. For instance, by entering a text prompt, creators can generate textures for objects like wooden treasure chests or weathered leather backpacks within seconds. Roblox claims that Texture Generator enables creators to accomplish tasks that would typically take hours or days in just 15 to 30 seconds.

Additionally, creators can use Texture Generator to generate multiple versions of an object in various colors or textures. After generating a 3D object, creators can save and apply it, with the option to retry if they are dissatisfied with the result.

Nick Tornow, Vice President of Creator Engineering at Roblox, emphasized the significance of these AI technologies in facilitating content creation on the platform. He stated that the new tools empower creators to focus more on creative ideation and less on implementation, thereby enhancing their experiences and ultimately contributing to business growth.

Avatar Auto Setup is currently in the alpha phase, whereas Texture Generator is accessible in public beta and can be utilized within Roblox Studio.
