Snapchat introduces a novel AI-powered selfie feature named ‘Dreams’

Snapchat has introduced a fresh generative AI feature known as “Dreams,” which empowers users to craft imaginative images of themselves immersed in various scenarios – envision a mermaid within a deep seascape or an individual adorned in Renaissance-era regalia. The official launch follows a prior report by TechCrunch, forecasting Snapchat’s imminent introduction of this feature.

Getting started with Dreams involves navigating to the Memories section, where a dedicated tab for Dreams resides. By submitting a few selfies, users can create their personalized Generative AI model, providing access to their distinctive Dreams. A complimentary pack containing eight images constitutes the initial offering. Subsequently, additional packs can be acquired for a nominal fee of $1.

In the near future, Dreams will have the capacity to include both the user and any friends who have also embraced this feature.

Initially, Dreams is gradually rolling out in Australia and New Zealand, eventually reaching users worldwide in the coming weeks, as affirmed by Snapchat.

Snapchat is providing its users with access to a concept already familiar in various AI photo apps available on the App Store. Notable among these is Lensa, which gained prominence when its “magic avatars” went viral in the latter part of the previous year. Similarly, Remini garnered attention last month among TikTok users who discovered they could use the app to transform their selfies into professional-looking headshots for platforms like LinkedIn, bypassing the need for an expensive photoshoot.

The introduction of this new feature, Dreams, aligns with earlier indications. It was initially glimpsed this spring when reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi unveiled that the feature would enable users to integrate their own likenesses into imaginative realms powered by generative AI.

Dreams serves as an addition to Snapchat’s ever-expanding collection of generative AI capabilities. Earlier this year, the company unveiled its AI-driven chatbot, My AI, which now not only communicates through text but also responds with Snapbacks.
