Apple approved the change of Twitter app’s name to X

Twitter’s app has finally updated its name to X on the App Store after several weeks of brand alterations and discussions from its owner. Usually, Apple doesn’t let app creators use a single letter for their app’s name.

Twitter, not long ago, updated its apps on iOS and Android, ditching the old bird symbol and App Store images for the new “X” logo. But, it wasn’t able to modify its actual listed name on the App Store. This was because of a hiccup in the App Store Connect, the platform that lets app creators manage their apps. It gives an error when trying to name the app with just one character.

Nonetheless, it seems like Apple has today given Elon Musk’s X Corp., Twitter’s official owner, the go-ahead to use a single-letter app name. We’ve asked Apple for a statement and will revise the news if we get a response.

The X app also altered its App Store slogan from “Let’s talk.” to “Blaze Your Glory!!”. The meaning behind this is not clear. Musk tweeted this new slogan without any explanation.

On the other hand, the renaming of Twitter to X on Android had no issues and happened alongside the logo change.

Another app, also called X, had to alter its name over the weekend. This app had an invisible character with X to bypass Apple’s character restrictions. Its app description now states, “[We are not connected with Twitter/X and will soon rename our app].” The app’s creators voluntarily made this change and shared with TechCrunch that neither Twitter/X nor Apple contacted them about it.

The X app seems to have acquired the @x handle with no prior notice to its initial owner. The company didn’t pay the user but instead offered a range of X products and a tour of X’s HQ, as a token of gratitude.

X is also working on changing its subscription service’s name from Twitter Blue to X Blue. The company’s support page now says the subscription lets users upload videos up to three hours long, an hour longer than the previous two-hour limit.

Just recently, X also extended its ad revenue-sharing program around the world after giving out $5 million in the initial payment round. However, to earn, users must fulfill certain conditions: they need to be verified; have a minimum of 500 followers; and must have accumulated 15 million total impressions from their posts over the past three months.
