New iOS 16.6 released for iPhones. Here’s what you need to know

Apple has launched iOS 16.6, alongside updates for other devices, featuring bug fixes and security enhancements. Note that iOS 17 will no longer support older iPhone models.

Apple has now rolled out iOS 16.6 to iPhone users, along with updates for other devices. This latest software release includes “important bug fixes and security updates,” as mentioned in the release notes.

Apple has released iPadOS 16.6, tvOS 16.6, watchOS 9.6, and macOS 13.5 updates, all sharing the same release notes. Furthermore, a distinct HomePod update brings “performance and stability improvements.”

iOS 16.6 underwent developer and public beta phases starting in May. Recently, Apple issued the initial version of the iOS 16.6 release candidate.

This release focuses on bug fixes and security enhancements, without introducing new user-facing features. It is likely to be one of the final updates for iOS 16 before shifting the focus entirely to security updates. However, one exception to this is the inclusion of Hebrew language support for Apple TV and HomePod.

Users who choose to postpone upgrading to iOS 16 still have the option to go with iOS 15, which has now reached version 15.7.X.

Below is a step-by-step guide to updating your iPhone to iOS 16.6:

  • To access the software update, unlock your phone and go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If iOS 16.6 is available for your device, you’ll find it listed here.
  • Tap on “Download and Install.”
  • To finalize the update process, simply follow the on-screen instructions provided.
  • Once the update is finished, your iPhone will automatically restart, and you’ll be running iOS 16.6.

In the upcoming release of iOS 17, set for September, exciting new features will be introduced. However, it’s worth noting that support for iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus will be discontinued with this update. As a result, iOS 16 signifies the final update for these particular models. Rest assured, Apple will continue to deliver security updates for older iOS versions on compatible hardware for a considerable duration.
